I’m devastated!!Can someone please answer me as to why my bird died???

I was told by two different people at two different pet stores that as long as I left plenty of food and water it would be okay if I left My parakeet home alone for the weekend.. I bought him a cage at a garage sale the day before I left on Friday and thought everything was ok. I came home yesterday and found him dead out of the cage in another room.I feel horrible!! I thought I did everything right…Why did he die??? Was it that he couldn’t get to food or water..I was only gone less than two whole days….I have looked through the whole house and cannot find anything he could have eaten or gotten to that would have hurt him….
No Jessica the door was closed,he squeezed through the “bars”. I know now that the cage was not intended for a parakeet….

The only way you could really find out what your bird died from is if you still have the body. Take it to a certified avian veterinarian for a necropsy. However, that can be pricy!

There are so many things that could have happened to your bird. After squeezing out of the cage, he may have been unable to get back in to eat and drink. He could have flown into something – a window, the wall, a mirror…just about anything. He may have ingested something poisonous. He may have died of stress. If you recently purchased him, he may have been sick when you got him, and you did not know. If you have had him for a long time, he may have died of old age. If you got the cage at a garage sale, it may have been made with a toxic metal (see these articles: http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww14eii.htm and http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww66eiv.htm ). The cage may have been cleaned improperly, and still had bacteria from another animal, or it may have had mold on it from the previous owner.

Unfortunately, the list goes on and on. As I said, a necropsy would be the only way to tell for sure.

I’m sure you have learned some very painful lessons from this, Do not purchase things from a garage sale for your pets. Make sure that whatever you purchase for a pet is size appropriate. Do not listen to pet store salespeople. (Many know what they are talking about, but many more do not – in most cases, they are salespeople, not animal experts.) Do not leave any animal alone for more than 10-12 hours unless you have someone checking on them.
